FIELD TRIPS
BEES hosts a Wildlife Field Visit Programme throughout the year. The programme aims to explore a range of habitats to study their natural history and management issues relating to their upkeep. The programme is organised and delivered by a committed and knowledgeable group of volunteers. Planning meetings are held regularly to agree and distribute the programme.

Bookings must be made in advance (please ring BEES office for details).
Where minibus transport is offered there is a charge of £6.00.

The Minibus Bus departs at 9.30am from the Italian Centre,68 Little Horton Lane.BD5, (unless indicated otherwise)
  • Please ensure you bring adequate food and drink for the day.
  • Wear strong footwear and waterproof clothing.
  • All trips must be booked and paid for in advance where applicable.
  • We ask for a donation of £2 if you chose to use your own transport when the minibus is offered.
  • All people irrespective of background and experience are welcome

February, March and April 08

TUESDAY 5 FEBRUARY: HODSOCK SNOWDROPS
Hodsock Priory Gardens near Blyth in Nottinghamshire are only open for the month of February and include a 5 acre snowdrop garden and a woodland walk. Last year on our February visit we saw, in addition to snowdrops, hellebores, winter aconites, cyclamen, crocuses and beautiful flowering shrubs and trees. There is a tea-room and toilets and bulbs and plants for sale. Flat shoes or boots should be worn. Bring a camera.

TUESDAY 19 FEBRUARY: OLD MOOR RSPB RESERVE
This excellent wetland reserve in the Dearne valley has been visited many times by our group. It has been greatly improved in recent years with the addition of a visitor centre with café and shop and also extra areas of wetland have been added. The walking is on good paths and there are several hides, which are not too far apart. There will be a charge for non-RSPB members. Don’t forget your binoculars/telescopes.

TUESDAY 26 FEBRUARY: SLIDE SHOW:
                                 TWO CONTRASTING YWT RESERVES

Margaret will show slides of  two Yorkshire Wildlife Reserves
1  Low Wood, Riddlesden – a woodland in the Aire valley on Millstone Grit and
2  Askham Bog, near York – fen/bog habitat.
The focus for both reserves will be on the natural history and the work of conservation volunteers throughout the year.

TUESDAY 4 MARCH: A DAY IN UPPER WHARFEDALE
We will take a circular route from Kettlewell to Starbotton and return, encompassing lead-mining areas and riverside environs. The distance covered will be approximately 5 miles and there are no difficult stiles.

TUESDAY 18 MARCH: RED KITES AT HAREWOOD
On a previous visit to the Harewood Estate in March 2005, we were rewarded with excellent views of Red Kites, Buzzards and Red Deer. The 5 mile walk will take us round the estate again. The walking is on paths, which may be muddy in places and there are a few moderate inclines.

TUESDAY 1 APRIL: SPRING RAMBLE
                                 NEAR KNARESBOROUGH

This circular ramble of between 5-6 miles was planned for Autumn 2007, but had to be postponed. We will start at the village of Brearton, north east of Knaresborough and walk on field-paths and lanes to the picturesque village of Farnham, returning by a different route. The walking is fairly easy with no difficult styles, though some paths may be muddy and there is a short stretch of road walking. Spring flowers should be abundant in the hedgerows.

TUESDAY 8 APRIL: FLOWERS, MAMMALS AND A
                                 BATTLEFIELD

We will explore the area around Saxton and Towton, which lies between Sherburn in Elmet and Tadcaster. In the morning we will be on private land (with permission) to explore a woodland noted for mammals and primroses. Later our tour will take us to a battlefield dating back to the War of the Roses and will include other places of interest in the area. The walking will be on footpaths and tracks.

TUESDAY 22 APRIL: SPRING ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF
                                   BRADFORD

We will explore the Pitty Beck area near Thornton, where spring flowers, such as Marsh Marigolds, should be in full bloom. Afterwards we will venture on part of the Great Northern Trail and the Bronte Way. Total distance covered will be no more than 5 miles.

TUESDAY 15 APRIL: PLANNING MEETING 10.00 AM,
                                   AT THE YMCA



Children with an accompanying adult are welcome on any of the trips
 at half price.



In the event of cancellation due to poor weather BEES would notify members and rearrange date of visit. In the event of a member being unable to attend due to illness they would need to inform BEES and payment would be credited to a future trip.
