FRUIT
ORCHARDS ON SCHOOL GROUNDS
The Eschools project has been developing fruit orchards on School
grounds.
This is part of the programme to improve the environmental potential of
school grounds and provide outdoor learning experience to the pupils
linked to the curriculum.
The schools involved so far are St John’s CE Primary,
Bierley,
Lower Fields Primary, East Bowling, Wycliffe C of E, Shipley and
Brackenhill Primary, Great Horton.
Pupils will be able to gain experience in growing fruit observing tree
growth and increase of yields plus cycles of blossom, fruiting and
dormancy over the year.
Having ownership of the site and the trees will promote participation
and joy in harvesting. Sharing of the crop will encourage the pupils to
eat produce which is good for them and has been grown locally.
Apples, pears, plums and cherry trees have been planted with the
varieties selected suited to the region. These include: Greensleeves,
Katy, Ribston Pippin and Grandpa Buxton apples, Stella cherry,
Conference pear and Victoria plum. These have been planted using short
rootstock (m26 and mm106) so that young people can reach the fruit when
ripe.
A school does not need large amounts of land to create an area for
fruit trees as the benefit can be achieved with any number of fruit
trees.
